Integrated Fare System |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Seoul City has the integrated fare system designed to reduce financial burdens when switching between forms of mass transportation. Passengers will have to pay 900 Won (1,000 Won in cash) over a given distance no matter how many times they change between buses (including village buses) and subways, with an increment of 100 won charged for every additional 5 km. |
| |
|
|
| |
|
A
valid T-Money card or existing traffic card is required to get discount.
A passenger needs to present his/her traffic card to the fare terminal when
getting on and off the bus (or subway line), and he/she must repeat this
procedure when transferring to another form of transportation to record
the distance covered.
To be eligible for the discount, a passenger must transfer to the next
bus or subway train within half an hour of alighting from the last mode
of transportation (or within an hour between 09:00 p.m. and 07:00 a.m.). |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Passengers who pay their fare in cash will pay 100 won
more than travelers using a traffic card.
T-Money can be purchased and refilled at vendor kiosks selling bus tickets
near most city bus stops, or any Woori Bank branch. Passengers can also
use the automated refilling machines located at each subway station. Existing
traffic cards will continue to be used, along with T-Money. |

|
Seoul currently has eight subway lines and a surface
line of the government-run Korean National Railroad (KNR) merging with
them, which serve Seoulites and visitors most effectively. Colored differently
between lines, Seoul subway lines link the farthest parts of Seoul and
its satellite cities and cross each other at various transferable stations,
marked by the symbol.
In general, subway trains operate at intervals of 2.5 to 3 minutes during
the morning and evening rush hours and at intervals of 4 to 6 minutes
during the non-rush hours.

Buses |
| |
|
|
| |
|
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is to operate newly designed buses on the newly adjusted routes as of July 1, 2004. New bus stop signs are more easily recognizable than the current ones, which are expected to be colorized according to the type of city buses: Blue, Green, Red and Yellow. The following is a detailed description of each bus. |
| |
|
|
| |
|
 |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Blue Bus
This type of buses will operate at
higher speeds and access the median bus lane connecting suburban areas
to downtown Seoul. The city government is partly in charge of its operation.
The city has taken full consideration to introduce 3 kinds of buses belonging
to the Blue Bus category: bendable bus, CNG (compressed natural gas) bus
with a lower platform, and regular large-sized CNG bus. The blue color
represents Seoul's skyline and Hangang (River) to symbolize security and
freedom.
Green Bus
Green bus will be flexibly operated by private bus
companies, to connect major subway stations or bus terminals in downtown
Seoul. It is similar with the city bus and the community shuttle bus currently
in operation. Green stands for the mountains surrounding the city.
Red Bus
The red buses will be express buses designed specially
for those commuting between downtown Seoul and the metropolitan area.
The color red exudes energy of speed.
Yellow Bus
This bus will circle downtown Seoul and stop at stations
for blue buses and major railway stations, as well as business, tourist
and shopping areas. Yellow was selected for its dynamic and friendly image.
* Useful Tips on the Bus Numbers
It is easy to identify the starting point and the destination of a bus
at a single glance. The entire area of Seoul is divided into eight zones,
which are clearly indicated in the numerical designation of each bus. |

Taxis |
| |
|
|
| |
|
There are three kinds of taxis -- general taxis, deluxe taxis, and call taxis. The last two types of taxis offer a high standard of service compared to the first, but are more expensive than the first. You cannot always expect that a taxi driver is fluent in English, so it is advisable to tell the landmarks (many major hotels and attracts) near the destination. Vacant taxis have indicator lamps on, in front of assistant driver seat and on the roof. |
| |
|
|
| |
|
General Taxis |
| |
|
The
fare is calculated by both the distance and time of travel. The basic fare
is 1,600 won for the first 2 km and 100 won for each additional 168m. If
the taxi is going less than 15 km per hour due to traffic congestion, an
additional charge of 100 won per each 41 seconds is added to the basic fare.
The fare between Gimpo Airport and downtown Seoul is usually around 13,000
won, although it could be higher if there is heavy traffic. Extra 20 percent
is added to the fare between midnight and 04:00. |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Deluxe Taxis |
| |
|
Deluxe
taxis, called 'mobeom' taxis in Korean, are black with a yellow sign on
the top and the words 'Deluxe Taxi' written on the side. They offer a higher
quality of services. The fare is 4,000 won for the first 3km and 200 won
for each additional 205m or 50 seconds if the speed drops below 15km per
hour. There is no late-night surcharge. The usual fares between Gimpo Airport
and downtown, and Gimpo Airport and Jamsil are about 23,000 won and 35,000
won, respectively, but |
| |
|
Could be more or less depending on traffic. Car phones
are available and receipts are given. Deluxe taxi stands are located at
hotels, bus and subway stations, bus terminals, and on major city streets.
By calling (82-2) 3431-5100, you can take a deluxe taxi quickly and conveniently
wherever you are. Also, you can make a reservation on the phone for a ride
anywhere, at any time. |

Visitor Guide Taxis |
| |
|
Visitors Guide Taxi was intended to lessen foreign travelers' inconvenience, as one of their biggest headaches has been the language barrier. Visitors Guide Taxis are black with a yellow sign on the roof and a label reading "VISITORS GUIDE" on both sides of the vehicle. The English-speaking and Japanese-speaking drivers were trained, tested, and finally selected from drivers of deluxe taxis, or 'moebeom' taxis in Korean. English and Japanese brochures on Visitors Guide Taxi are provided at major tourist sites including airports, hotels, and the Korea National Tourism Organization (KNTO) overseas branch offices. For more information, contact the Taxi and Logistics Division, Transportation Office of the Seoul Metropolitan Government by email at transit@www.metro.seoul.kr or at (82-2) 3707-9751~2. |

|
Call Taxis for the Handicapped |
| |
|
Call taxi for the handicapped is a special taxi service for people with disabilities provided by the Seoul Metropolitan Government as part of efforts to facilitate travel of the physically challenged, which is the first of its kind in the country. 100 fleets of van that can accommodate 9 or 12 people are tentatively on service until the end of 2002 and will be initially put into service from 2003. The fare of call taxis for the handicapped is 40 percent of that of normal cabs.
Call Taxi for the Handicapped (Regular Taxi Fare)
- Basic Fare: 1,900 Won / 5km (1,900 Won / 2km)
- Extra Fare: 100 Won / 420m (100 Won / 168m )

Rental Cars |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Rental cars are available for those visitors who choose
to drive in Korea. Drivers must meet the following requirements to rent
a car: |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Have
more than 1 year's driving experience
Have an international driver's license
Be over 21 years of age
Possess a valid passport |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Driving safely in Korea takes some practice. Cars are
driven on the right side of the road and most road signs are written in
Korean and English. Due to the high traffic density and complex road systems,
it is probably advisable to hire a driver along with the car, especially
in large cities. Visitors who wish to hire a chauffeur-driven car must be
prepared to pay the driver's meals and hotel expenses as well. |
